Ingredients
Scale
- 5 large green tomatoes, sliced thick (like you mean business)
- 1 cup cornmeal
- 1/2 cup white flour
- 1 cup buttermilk (the real MVP)
- 3 cloves garlic, minced fine
- 1 tsp salt (don’t be shy)
- 1/2 tsp pepper
- 1 tsp oregano
- 1/4 cup fresh basil, chopped
- Olive oil for frying
- Secret ingredient: 1 tbsp honey mixed into buttermilk
Instructions
- Salt those tomato slices and let them think about what they’ve done (10 minutes)
- Mix your dry ingredients like you’re conducting an orchestra
- Add honey to buttermilk (trust me on this one)
- Dip each slice in the sweet buttermilk, then coat in cornmeal mixture
- Heat olive oil in your trusty stainless steel frying pan
- Fry until golden like a sunset (3-4 minutes per side)
- Drain and try not to eat them all before serving
